What is AVID Weekly?

  • A curriculum tool designed by AVID Center to help teach critical reading skills to students proven to be a strong key to success in college and beyond
  • Uses current newspaper articles from the Los Angeles Times/Washington Post News Service to provide greater interest level for students and to broaden their critical reading skills to include various types of writing
  • Program is based on critical reading strategies developed by AVID Center (e.g. Marking The Text, Charting The Text, Summarizing Sections of The Text, Writing In The Margins)
  • AVID Weekly is internet-delivered and accessible to your teachers 24 hours per day, 7 days per week
  • Can be used at the high school and middle school levels
  • Articles are rated for level of difficulty: Foundational, Intermediate and Advanced

What your school receives with a school year subscription:

  • Up to 20 usernames/passwords for various school personnel to access the articles and lessons at any time
  • Ten new articles available for viewing and/or download on the first of each month (September through June)
  • A sample instructional model/lesson both in full length and summary versions is provided each month in conjunction with two of that month’s articles
  • A viewable and printable grid each month that shows the title of each article, level of difficulty of article, content area of each article, and applicable critical reading strategies for each article
  • Access at any time to instructions on each of the Critical Reading Strategies
  • Access via archives on AVID Weekly website to all articles, grids, sample lessons, and instructions on critical reading strategies posted during the current school year
